- Reform in force 1 July 2026
- Register entry or deposit within 30 days
- A licensed trustee acts and files

What's included
For a settlor, a family or an adviser who wants a Liechtenstein trust prepared, from the first data sheet to the register entry. Where a foundation is also in view, see what a founder decides before a Liechtenstein foundation is endowed.
The trust file
We prepare the purpose, settlor, beneficiaries or purpose, trust property and data sheet, with the identity and origin-of-assets papers the trustee's checks need.
Trust deed and supplementary deed
Drafted and signed with a licensed Liechtenstein trustee or lawyer; we prepare the commercial content and the data sheet they work from.
The trusteeship
A licensed Liechtenstein trustee or trust company takes the trusteeship. LFT never acts as trustee.
Register entry or deposit
Within 30 days of creation, the licensed trustee or the Repräsentant files the register application or deposits the deed with the Office of Justice.
Beneficial-owner report
The trust reports its beneficial owners to the register of beneficial owners; we coordinate the data. The access note in step 7 applies.
Existing trusts and the reform
We prepare what an existing trust needs for the reform dates: 31 December 2026 for charitable trusts, 31 December 2027 for private-benefit trusts.
How setting up a trust works
The law fixes no time for the whole set-up, only periods for single steps.

Purpose, settlor, beneficiaries or purpose, the trust property, and whether the trust is charitable or private-benefit. Client, with the licensed trustee or lawyer.
Documents and checks
Identity documents and information on the origin of the assets; the trustee identifies the contracting party and the beneficial owner. Client supplies; LFT collects; licensed trustee checks.
Draft the deed
The trust deed and any supplementary deed; a private-benefit trust names at least one information-entitled person and a successor. Licensed trustee or lawyer drafts; LFT prepares the data sheet.
Sign and transfer
A written agreement between settlor and trustee, or a declaration the trustee accepts in writing; a settlor who is also the trustee needs no separate acceptance (PGR Art. 899(1)-(2)). The property moves under the form rules of its asset type (Art. 899(4)). Settlor and trustee; a notary or registry where the asset needs one.
Representative and information
If no trustee is resident or seated in Liechtenstein, a Repräsentant is appointed. Each information-entitled person is told in writing within 30 days of appointment. Licensed trustee.
Register or deposit
A trust for more than twelve months is filed for entry within 30 days of creation, or its deed is deposited. A charitable trust cannot deposit; it is entered and notified to STIFTA. Licensed trustee or Repräsentant.
Report beneficial owners
The trust reports them within 30 days of entry or deposit (VwbPG Art. 4(4)(b)). Since 30 July 2026 register access is limited and deadlines that cannot be met remain suspended. The trust; the sources name no filer.
Keep it in order
Documents stay available in Liechtenstein; amending deeds are deposited, and changes to registered facts filed, within 30 days. Licensed trustee.

Trust and trust enterprise compared
A foundation (Stiftung) is a separate vehicle, set out in the foundation law guide. This table compares the trust and the trust enterprise by criteria only.

| Criterion | Trust | Treuunternehmen |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the property | The trustee, in its own name, for beneficiaries or a purpose | – |

Problems we solve
Four points to settle before signing. Where a family business is involved, see a succession plan for a family business held in a Liechtenstein structure.
Who acts as trustee
Forming a trust for third parties and acting as trustee by way of business need an FMA licence (TrHG Art. 2). Without one it is an offence. A licensed trustee acts; LFT coordinates.
What the registers show
The application lists no settlor or beneficiary data. Entries are public (HRV Art. 6(1)); supporting documents open on a credible legitimate interest; a deposited deed only to the depositor.
A settlor living abroad
The test is the trustee's seat, not yours. Without a resident trustee, a Repräsentant is appointed: an EEA national permanently resident in Liechtenstein, or a domestic legal entity naming one.
Form rules of the assets
Creating a trust does not replace the form rules for moving land or shares. Where shares are only to be held, a licensed trustee may act as a nominee shareholder who holds the shares in trust.
Is your existing trust ready for the reform dates?
Send us the deed and the register status. We prepare a checklist of the reform dates and documents for the licensed trustee to review.
Why work with us
Annika Vetsch, Private wealth and foundations lead in Vaduz, prepares each trust file in English. We collect the documents, prepare the data sheet and track the dates; a licensed Liechtenstein trustee, named in your engagement letter, forms the trust, acts as trustee and files.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Liechtenstein trust still an option after the 2026 reform that adds an information-entitled person?
Yes. A trust is still created by a written agreement between settlor and trustee, or by a declaration the trustee accepts in writing; where the settlor is also the trustee, no separate acceptance is needed (PGR Art. 899(1)-(2)). From 1 July 2026 a private-benefit trust must name at least one information-entitled person and a successor.
Is the trust entered in a public register, and who can see the settlor's name?
A trust created for more than twelve months is filed for entry within 30 days, or its deed is deposited. The application holds no settlor or beneficiary data. Entries are public; supporting documents open to a person who makes a legitimate interest credible. A deposited deed is open only to the depositor and the person authorised.
Will the UBO register or the trust's register entry expose the settlor and the beneficiaries?
A trust reports its beneficial owners to the Office of Justice within 30 days of entry or deposit. Who may see that data now is not settled in the sources: since the cyberattack of 30 July 2026 external access is limited, identification is in person in Vaduz, and deadlines that cannot be met remain suspended.
Can a company without a trustee licence set up a trust for me, and who acts as the trustee?
No. Forming a trust for third parties and acting as trustee by way of business need an FMA licence, and doing so without authority is an offence (TrHG Art. 80(1)). LFT prepares the file and coordinates; a licensed Liechtenstein trustee, named in the engagement letter, forms the trust, acts as trustee and files.
Do I need a resident trustee or a Repräsentant if I live abroad?
It depends on the trustee, not on where the settlor lives. If no trustee is a resident person or a legal entity seated in Liechtenstein, a Repräsentant must be appointed: an EEA national permanently resident in Liechtenstein, or a domestic legal entity that appoints one. The Repräsentant may file the register application or deposit the deed.
What is the difference between a trust, a foundation (Stiftung) and a Treuunternehmen?
The comparison is by criteria, not a recommendation. A trustee holds a trust's property in its own name. A Treuunternehmen is formed with or without legal personality and needs a trust fund of at least CHF 30,000. A charitable trust is supervised by STIFTA. A foundation is a separate vehicle, covered in the guide linked above the table.
What happens to my existing trust after 1 July 2026, and by which dates must it be changed?
Existing charitable trusts are notified to STIFTA by 31 December 2026, and a charitable trust whose deed was deposited under the old law is filed for entry in the same period. Existing private-benefit trusts have until 31 December 2027 to amend the documents, appoint an entitled beneficiary as first information-entitled person or apply for a court-appointed auditor.
Who is the information-entitled person, and can it be the settlor, a beneficiary or an auditor?
It can be the settlor, a beneficiary (not in a purpose trust) or another person the settlor determines. If the deed names none, its rules fail, or accounting proves impracticable, the trustee must apply to the Landgericht for an auditor within three months of learning of the defect (PGR Art. 928c). The person is informed within 30 days of appointment.
Can the settlor appoint further power holders beside the trustee, and what must the trust deed say about them?
Yes. The settlor may provide for further power holders beside the trustee, for example to fix a distribution or supervise the administration (PGR Art. 917 para. 3a). The deed must state any hint that they are or may be provided for; such a person may also be named information-entitled person or successor. The statute does not use the word protector.
What does a trust pay in tax in Liechtenstein?
This page states no tax result of a trust. Whether a particular trust is taxed, and how, depends on its form and on the people involved, and the sources leave the position of an individual trust open. Questions such as a tax ruling requested from the Liechtenstein tax administration are coordinated with a licensed trustee.
Which assets can be placed in a trust, and do the form rules of the asset still apply?
Any part of the assets can go under a named trustee; moving them still follows their form rules (PGR Art. 899(4)). The sources name no list of excluded assets, so none is given here. Unless the documents say otherwise, investment is limited to Art. 913(1) forms, except for property of persons or entities resident or seated abroad (Art. 913(4)).
How long does it take to set up a trust in Liechtenstein, and what do the official fees come to?
The law fixes no time for the whole set-up, only periods for single steps, among them 30 days for entry or deposit. Official fees under the GbHr-GebV (version of 1 August 2024): trust entry CHF 300 base fee, deposit CHF 300, entry of a Repräsentant CHF 30. LFT's and the trustee's fees are on request.
